Many people drift through life going from day to day and without much in terms of progress. A major reason for that is because of a set-out plan on what they would like to achieve in life.
It’s almost like traveling on a long endless road to nowhere. Goal setting is a powerful way of creating the kind of life you want to live in the future. Talk to anyone who is successful today and they will tell you that they would never be where they are had the not set goals.
What do you want to achieve in life?
Knowing what you want in life is the first step towards your success. It might surprise you but a lot of people simply don’t know what they want in life. Sure enough, we all want more or less the same things in many aspects e.g. good health, a good education, nice paying job, etcetera but isn’t there more to life than what everyone wants?
Consider the following points
- Do you want a good job or a career?
- Do you want a good education or broad knowledge?
- Do you want to live in a house or a home?
- Do you want to benefit from your efforts or do want others to benefit as well?
- Do you want true inner happiness or do want happiness that comes from others?
Goal setting goes beyond the ordinary things that we live for, from day to day. Setting a goal is what brings out the true identity of who you are. That’s why most new year resolutions are soon forgotten. They don’t represent the person you really are.
If you have a burning desire to achieve something e.g. learn how to play piano, you can’t just wake up one morning and say I want to. It has to be something that you have cultivated within your psyche over a long period of time that it becomes a part of you.
Before I go into why you should write your goals down let us look at some of the things you can do as far as goal setting is concerned
Break them down into tiny pieces
Remember the old saying “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” That’s exactly how you should embark on your journey towards attaining your goals. Don’t overwhelm yourself with emotions and fear.
A lot of people fail because they try to bite more than they can chew, end up burning themselves out from fatigue and the end result is a life of regret and unfulfilled dreams. Life is not a race. Chip away slowly and you will get there.
Follow your passion
A common mistake that some parents make is to tell their children that they can be anything they want in life. Sorry to disappoint you kids but you can’t be anything you want in life. Not everyone can be a rocket scientist or pro footballer. You can only be what lies within your initiative
Even within the realm of your initiative lies certain limitations. If you don’t have the resources or capacity to achieve a certain goal or you don’t seem to be making headway, maybe it’s time to re-evaluate by working what is within your reach. The day you have the ability, go out and soar like an eagle.
Start with the things you love.
Look deep within yourself and try to examine what it is that makes you happy. Don’t set your goals based on others people’s opinions. That’s a recipe for disaster. If you are just starting college, chose a career that you will enjoy. If you falling in love, be sure it’s somebody you enjoy being around with. Whatever you do, let it come from within.
Have a game plan
In life, you have got to have a plan. It doesn’t even have to be elaborate to start off with. If you want to learn how to play the piano, I would probably be thinking of acquiring the piano, taking lessons before thinking of all the wonderful music I will be playing. Within that broad plan then you can have the little plans, like saving up, research., etcetera.
This is also where writing down your goals comes into play. Your written goals are the blueprint to your success and trust me, it’s a must if you want to attain your goals. Here are the reasons
Power of the written word
Never underestimate the psychological effect of the written word.
When you write your goals down, your mind sees a path of where to follow rather than randomly going with the flow of things. If you have decided on what you want to achieve, get a diary and write down what you will need to do every day.I normally plan my week on Sunday evenings for the week ahead.
I have monthly goals and quarterly goals. Try not to worry too much about my ultimate goal because what you do today is what will become a reality in the future. If you are consistently achieving your short-term goals, it’s not hard to see what lies ahead.
Motivation and focus
We all know how sometimes it feels to be totally disconnected from our goals. This is often due to lack of focus on what needs to be done. When you wake up in the morning and you are 100% sure of what you need to do, you are motivated to take action on what lies ahead of you. When you dont, chances are your day will drift away without achieving much.
Shiny object Syndrome
People who are re over-ambitious easily tend to be distracted on their goals. This is because as you chase your dreams other opportunities tend to pop up along the way tempting you to drift off course. When you write your goals down you have a better understanding of how much time you have and what you can squeeze in within the timeframe you have. Writing your goals down is like a filter to distraction.
Celebrate your progress
It’s hard traveling on the road of life especially when you can’t see the end in sight. Life’s little achievements along your journey will help you see the future that lies ahead and will leave you feeling better about yourself as opposed to wondering away with no direction.
If you haven’t started writing your goals down, this is a good time to start. I will let you in on another secret. Once you have your long term goals written down, read them aloud every day, morning and evening. The more you do that the more your subconscious mind begins to see and perceive the end result as a reality.
What happens once I’ve achieved my goals?
Sorry to bust your bubble but there is no end to goal setting. The minute you achieve one you will want to achieve another. It’s like an addiction after that. Success is not a destination but a journey. Keep doing what you love and you will never work a day in your life.
Talking of doing what you love how about you check how I make money doing what I love.
Of equal importance is to remember to give back. Some of us are more privileged or have better opportunities than others and I believe it’s only fair to share your knowledge with those who are embarking on the same journey. There is great value in sharing.
Go out and prosper!!
