girl typing clipartDo you enjoy writing? If you do, then I have some good and bad news for you.

The good

There is a huge demand for writers out there. All you need is to be good at it and you are in business.

The bad

With high demand comes ruthless cut-throat competition.

This happens to be a highly competitive industry. To excel you must stand out from the rest. As you are a beginner, you are probably trying to get the hang of it. Not to worry. Rome wasn’t built in a day. As long as you have the passion and drive, success as a freelance writer is certainly possible.

Are You Looking For a Way to Earn Passive Income Online?

What exactly is freelance writing?

I think it’s pretty self-explanatory, isn’t it? We all know what a writer is so let’s start with freelancing. Apparently, the word freelance has its roots in the middle ages where knights would defend whichever King paid them rather than defend just one king.

More like guns for hire but since we are talking knights, swords for hire. They were called freelancers!

That explains it. A freelance writer only writes for whoever is willing to pay. Period. The same goes for all other professions but I think there are more freelance writers than in permanent employment.

The reason has a lot to do with the growth of blogging. People are looking for good quality content for their websites.

How do I become a freelance writer?

The short answer to that question is. Start writing. I know that sounds vague but that’s where it all starts. Don’t wait for the right moment. If your chi is telling you that you should be writing, then please do so.

You don’t have a computer. Use a typewriter. Don’t have a typewriter, use pen and paper. Okay, that typewriter thing is a joke. But you get my drift. To succeed in this industry, you will need to horn your writing skills before you can start seeing the money.

Where do I start?

The first thing you will need to have is access to a computer and an internet connection. If you are just starting off, visit other blogs and see the work of other writers. Learn how to do research on various topics. I would highly suggest that you work on topics that you have some interest in. If you don’t enjoy what you are writing, your clients won’t either.

Register your profile with online job websites.

typing on keyboardAs you begin to gain confidence in writing the next step is to let the world know who you are. There a very many online platforms that take in writers who earn commissions for every job you do.

I will list some of them down the further down in this post. I must warn you that as a newbie don’t expect to start reaping in some big bucks. Most jobs pay less than $10 for a 1000-word article. Again don’t think of the immediate payoff. Think long-term.

Having said that, dollars go a long way in certain parts of the worlds, so yes it’s possible to live on writing a couple of articles a day.

Get trained

Without training in most industries, it’s hard to get the proper feel of what you do. Training helps you understand how the game really works. Find a mentor. Someone who will guide you along your journey. Learn how to sell yourself to big companies and increase your income. You will be surprised at how much you don’t know, even for a seasoned writer.

Own your content.

Writing is a way of expression of yourself. We all have different ways of doing that. Write the way you talk. The problem with copying how others write is that people can see through it. Let your words flow.

Think of how you would explain a point to a close friend. Let your vibe flow.

Create an online portfolio.

As you build your name in the writing fraternity start picking out some of your finest pieces of work and put them up as pdf attachments on a website for viewing. Start marketing yourself professionally using social media and proper SEO articles and scale up your work.

Building a website is an easy thing to do these days. You don’t even need to spend money to own one. Connect with people in the industry and let your word spread.
