What is Thirty One Gifts?
Thirty One Gifts was founded by Cindy Monroe in 2003. Apparently she started the business in her basement. She did the right thing because the business is currently worth $390 M as of 2020, with roughly over 65,000 sales representatives in North America.
The company went through some tough times years ago, in terms of growth but in recent years they have managed to get a good footing in the industry.
Thirty One Gifts is a multi-level marketing (also referred to as network marketing) company that distributes personalized products through independent consultants.
They are based out of New Albany, OH.

How does Thirty One Gifts work?
To become a consultant with Thirty One Gifts, you will need to pay one of the two enrollment kits for either $99 or $179.
This being a typical multi-level marketing company, there are basically to ways you can earn money.
- Earn commissions through retail product sales.
- Earn commissions when those who join under you and recruit other new members.
To get people to buy your products you will need to host parties where they can sell their products to a large group of people at one time.
You can also have online parties. Consultants earn 25% commission on the products they sell.
Generally, the prices are low enough that they would appeal to many potential customers. There other bonus rewards that you can earn depending on how large your team gets.
To stay active in the business you will need to maintain $200 in sales every three months.
Compensation plans can be quite complex so I would rather not give you breakdown. I will let an expert explain it to you.
Can you make money with Thirty One Gifts
I do believe for a person with the right skill set, one can make money. I have personally met a lot of people who found huge success in network marketing.
If you have that charm that comes with the gift of the gab, this could work well for you. Unfortunately, most people just suck at selling. On the other end of the spectrum, people just don’t like being sold stuff.
According to their income disclosure of 2017, only 1.1% of consultants were able to make between $10,000 to $100,000 per year. A whopping 92.7% made less than $1000 per year. 18% made less than a dollar!
That should not come as a surprise. Most MLMs operate within the realm of these figures.
I have an art background and I must say I would buy some of their products. The colors a great and very trendy. They are also reasonably priced, which is rare in most MLMs.
There are also heavily involved in charity donating millions of dollars to non-profit organizations, most of which benefit women and families. While this isn’t a unique thing in the MLM industry it’s still good to know a company cares beyond making money.
On the BBB.org website, there appear to be numerous complaints ranging from product breaking due to poor customer service, product quality, refunds, and other issues. They have tried their best to respond to them but it still does not reflect well on the company.
Product quality is the one thing that consumers are after and it can be very annoying to buy a new product and then ask for a refund within days.
I also feel that since they are not selling consumables products, you might have an uphill task growing your business. Most MLMs into health and wellness products which keep the money rolling since people will are returning customers.
You can only buy too many totes and handbags.
Is Thirty One Gifts a Scam?
Some people get all anxious when they hear about MLMs. The recruiting nature of the business certainly doesn’t feel right.
Approaching friends and family with the opportunity of a lifetime can be quite intrusive. It’s even worse when you are hitting on total strangers on the streets.
I think the general rule of thumb is, if a company has a product or service to sell, then it’s legit. Scams sell false hope. They also don’t stick around for long.
Thirty One Gifts has been around since 2003. They are here for the long haul.
Multi-level marketing seems to generate a lot of excitement, especially for newbies. The fact is, it’s incredibly hard to make money in this industry. My opinion is it an outdated way of doing business.
I did it for a couple of months and even after approaching everyone I knew, nobody signed up. In fact, I ended up losing money.
Most people you approach with an opportunity like this have probably heard of a similar one before and so they would generally be very skeptical. There are perhaps thousands of MLMs and new ones popping up every so often.
According to this article on Wikipedia, over 99% of people who join MLM companies lose money. That is a big number. And yet people keep joining MLMs. The prospect of making money is always very tempting especially when you hear that it’s super easy.
The fall out rate is massive. Most people will be gone once they realize what they have to do to make money.
I also tend to think that it is not really a business. Cindy Monroe owns the business and hires consultants who are paid commissions on product sales and recruiting new consultants.
Are there better alternatives to Thirty One Gifts?
I would say one of the most effective and long term ways to make money selling products or services is through your own website.
No need to run around chasing after people to join your opportunity. There are billions of people connected on the internet today. You just need to put yourself in front of part of that audience.
To prove it, its not a coincidence that you are reading this page. I had to do a fair bit of work to get you here. Works all the time.
I have learned how to do this through this online education platform.
