What is Motives Cosmetics About?

What is Motives Cosmetics About - homepage snippetHi and welcome to my Motives Cosmetics review. I would imagine that perhaps a friend or relative might have approached you with the business idea of joining Motives Cosmetics.

Or maybe perhaps you are already in the game and just want to learn a bit more about the business.

It’s great that you are doing your research because the last thing you want to do is invest your hard-earned cash in business only for you to end up frustrated. That happens a lot in this sort of business.

So just what is Motives Cosmetics all about and can you make some good money with the business? Well, let’s find out, shall we?

  • Company Name: Motives Cosmetics
  • Website: motivescosmetics.com
  • Owner: Loren Ridinger
  • Price: $25

What is Motive Cosmetics?

There is no doubt that the makeup and cosmetics industry is massive and will only continue to grow. According to Business Insider, the industry is worth $152 billion and its on a steady trajectory. It’s no surprise.  Ladies (and some dudes) want to look and feel beautiful.

Of course with so much money in the industry, there is steep competition since everyone wants to cash in on the action.

Motive cosmetics is one such company. They distribute a variety of beauty and cosmetic products through a multi-level marketing business structure.

Products are sold through independent distributors.

The company was established in 2008 by Loren Ridinger. Apparently, they were an offshoot of Market America which was started by her husband JR Ridinger in 1992.

On their website, they claim that they are world leaders in the cosmetics industry, which in my opinion is a very bold statement. But is that what everyone says about their business.

Right out of the gate they appear to be a great company with great products. I could not find them on the Better Business Bureau website even though they claim to have an A+ rating on their website. When you click on that link it takes you to Markets America, which in essence is not the same company.

Products.

What is Motives Cosmetics About - productsOne thing that is impressive is the massive collection of products that they have in their catalog. If you go on their shopping portal and click eye shadow, they have over 80 products in there. That is a good thing because it becomes easier to sell products to a wide range of audiences.

Here are the categories that they have

  • Face
  • Eyes
  • Lips
  • Gift sets and Pallettes
  • Cosmetic Accessories
  • Skincare
  • Sun protection and Tanning
  • Nails
  • Gift Cards

At this stage is it’s worth mentioning that the products are quite reasonably priced. Most MLMs have exorbitant prices for products that you could find elsewhere for way less.

How it works

Have you ever been invited to a party expecting that wine and good food will be flowing all evening, only to find the host and a few other people who you might know sitting around the table with a whole load of products on display for you to buy?

It happened to me. I still asked the host for a beer.

Motive Cosmetics uses parties (a common method within MLM companies), to move their products.

Generally, there are two main ways one can make money with the business. One is by getting a percentage of the commissions on all retail sales. The second is by building a team and earning commissions on those who come under you. That is what the parties are meant for and that is where the real money lies.

To become a member you need to pay up $25 which is charged annually.

To jumpstart your business you will need to buy a starter kit. A basic kit will cost you $149.95

This kit gives you a range of different makeup, catalogs, order forms, and samples.

If you really want to shine you can go for the Motives Fast Start Kit which goes for a cool $399.

Distributors can earn up to 30% in retail profit.

Motives Cosmetics uses a binary system where you recruit two people on your team and then help each of them build a team of their own. You will be earning commissions on each recruit who comes under each team.

Pros and cons

There is no business that is perfect and certainly not the Motives Cosmetics business opportunity. Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of the business.

Pros

As I mentioned earlier I really do like the fact that the products are reasonably priced. That makes it easier to sell. I also haven’t heard any complaints about product quality so it appears that they have great products.

As far as making money goes, I think if you have a passion for cosmetics or you have worked as a beautician, then this opportunity could work out well for you.

It also takes the right mindset and skillset to succeed in the business. Unfortunately, a lot of people who join this business might go in with the expectation that it would be easy to start making money. The reality of it is far from what new distributors are made to believe.

Without Having to Recruit?

Cons

The fact of the matter is selling cosmetics is not easy. The industry is highly competitive. Many people are very loyal to the brands that they are used to and so unless you have the gift of convincing people, you might find it a little hard to sell the products.

The other problem I see is that selling products is really and hit and miss affair. If you have to host parties every week and the people who join in are not active in the business, then you will be losing money. There are many other hidden costs that do not appear but a pretty obvious.

When you host these parties, you might have to serve your guests some snacks and refreshments. You might also be driving a fair bit to attend meetings and meet new potential clients.

These tiny costs can add up quite a bit. If you are not making a lot of sales or you not able to build a team, it will mean you are losing money.

Wrap up

Multi-level marketing is probably the one business model that draws a lot of attention. There are people who swear that is is a scam while many die-hards will tell you that it is legitimate.

Is Motive Cosmetics a scam? My answer to that would be no.

The company has been in operation for 12 years at the time of writing this article. If it was a scam they would have been shut down by the FTC ages ago.

I believe as long as a company has a product behind it then you cant call it a scam. This is just business and it all comes down to willing buyer willing seller.

Pyramid and Ponzi schemes usually shuffle money around with no real tangible product. Money cannot just make itself and so a lot of people who come in early will reap all the benefits while those who come in later end losing everything.

They end up crumbling in the end and not without casualties.

With multi-level marketing, making money is not always a walk in the pack. A lot of people you meet probably have had someone approach them with a similar sales pitch and so naturally they are very skeptical.

New recruits are always told to gather the names of all their friends and family, call them up or let your upline contact them and hope and trust that they will join the bandwagon.

What normally happens is once they have gone through their entire phonebook and awkwardly approached a few strangers on the streets they end up fading off. No wonder the failure rate with MLMs is so high. People just dont like to be sold stuff. Its worse when the people in question are your friends and family.

Family might overlook your attempts to sell them into the business but friends…hmm. Good friends are hard to come by. You dont want to lose them by deceivingly inviting them for a meeting or party only for you to spring up the opportunity of a lifetime on them.

I have been involved in network marketing before. I must have contacted close to 200 people and not a single person joined my team. I can tell you, some of my friends were not that impressed.

It doesn’t matter what people tell you. This is not a real business. When you run your own business, you work on your own terms. You decide what to sell, how to sell it and to whom. You also set your own prices. The people running the business are the people whose products you are selling are the ones running a business

You, my friend, are just an overrated salesperson. If Motive Cosmetics executives decided today to wrap up the business, there goes your business.

The unfortunate thing about businesses like Motive Cosmetics is people sometimes find it hard to legitimize them largely due to the deceptive tactics that distributors use to get people to join.

It is possible to build your Motive Cosmetics business without recruiting. To do that you need to learn how to attract people to your business. Old school ways don’t work anymore.

The internet has massive potential and I would seriously consider going that route to build my business.

Are there alternatives to Motive Cosmetics?

Sure, there are.

There are many places online like Swagbucks where you can make some side cash doing surveys. Another great place is Fiverr where you can upload details of the kind of jobs you can do and bid for them.

I would say one of the most effective and long term ways to make money selling products or services is through your own website. I am talking about a fully functional website that you have built from the ground up.

You don’t even need to own the products to earn commissions with a website.

Nor do you need to recruit people to your business. People need to come to you. How about you check out how I make money online without having to recruit.

No point running around chasing after people to join your opportunity and yet you can reach the billions of people who are connected on the internet today. 4.48 billion people to be precise at the time of writing this article and growing by the day.

MLMs are a waste of time. You really need to ask yourself whether you stand a chance to make money. If you feel you have what it takes then, by all means, go for it. If you don’t, just remember to keep your options open.
