We are living at a time when the world is going through some seriously challenging times. The ongoing global pandemic has seen millions of people lose their jobs while entire businesses have had to shut down.
With the uncertainty of the pandemic, and a general feeling of anxiety stemming from not knowing what the future holds, is there a way you can keep making money from home?
The good news is yes there is. I have been an online marketer for years so I will tell you from my own experience it is a hundred percent possible.
However, before you can even remotely think of making money from home, you need to ask yourself what you are bringing to the table. Do you have something that will provide value to others?
If I had a toothache, I would go to the dentist. I would be willing to pay the dentist because they have the skillset that can solve the problem at hand. If my sink broke down I would call a plumber to come and fix it. I would not hesitate to pay whatever they are asking for as long as my problem is solved.
People are always looking for solutions. The most commonly searched terms on Google are keywords that begin with How to…
- How to fix a computer
- How to tie a knot
- How to invest in the stock market
- How to build a website
People are looking to learn things or purchase a product or service that they think would be of benefit to them. Here is where you come in. Do you have a solution to people’s needs? If you do, then you are in the money.
I started this blog 4 years ago. I had to learn how to work with WordPress. Prior to that, I worked as a graphic designer. I was able to combine my graphic design knowledge and my newly acquired WordPress skills to help me build a local web design agency.
Clients pay me money to build websites for them. I do that from the comfort of my own home. If had not acquired those skills, it would be a different story.
Most people have some sort of skill acquired either through school or self-education. The internet is a great place to leverage your skill to earn money.
Content is your currency.
The internet is all about content. Search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo simply offer a platform for anyone to display their content. Still, there are very few people who will go out of their way to put out that much-needed content.
So, what stops people from putting out their work online.
Most people are simply afraid to put out content because they don’t think they are good enough or they worry what others may think of them. It’s the same fear that grips people when it comes to public speaking. Apparently, people are less afraid of death than public speaking!
The first time I wrote a blog post, it took me 2 days to complete an 800 word article. It was hard. I kept wondering how people will receive it. Truth is there was nothing to worry about it since new content on a website takes ages before it shows up search results.
After months of writing, I got better, faster, and more confident. Four years down the line and here we are. My content can easily be found online. That is how you are able to read this. I put it out there without ever worrying who will read it or how they will perceive it. Those who love your work will appreciate it. Those who don’t…well they don’t pay your bills. Don’t stress about the haters.
Your content can be in the form of text, video, or podcasts. Go with what you are most comfortable with. What is important is to direct your audience to where you want them to go. That could be an offer, a free gift, subscription, or just a like and share on social media.
There numerous websites on the internet that offer a platform where anyone can make money from home. I will keep updating the information as we go along.
Let’s dive in and check out some of these platforms.
This happens to be my favorite platform, especially for beginners. Fiverr is a Tel Aviv based company launched in February 2010 by Micha Kaufman and Shai Wininger.
As the name loosely suggests, you can have jobs (called gigs) done for as low as 5 dollars but can go up to thousands of dollars depending on your level of skill.
What is interesting about Fiverr is that this is the wild west of online gigs. Anyone with or without special skills can post their gig. We have writers, graphic designers, singers, actors, you name it they have it. There are also strange gig providers like some guy who dresses like Jesus and will wish you a happy birthday or tribal dancers who will do whatever you want them to do.
The marketplace is basically a viral platform and it opens the door for illegal digital service. A good example is you can pay an actor on Fiverr to pretend that they are making money (often in tens of thousands of dollars). Its basically clickbait and the idea is to make you sign in.
You can however still get some good projects done for you from professional providers.
Do you have good writing skills? Iwriter might just be the platform for you. I have personally hired writers on this platform in the past. With writing, what you get paid is all dependent on your skill and level of commitment.
There are 4 levels that you can join and start earning.
- Standard- 1000 word article $8.28
- Premium- 1000 word article $11.50
- Elite- 1000 word article $20.25
- Elite Plus- 1000 word article $72
I would encourage you to rise to the level of Elite Plus. Bloggers are willing to pay top dollar for great content, so aspire to be top tier and you can make a tidy income from this platform.
What I found out when hiring on this platform is that the less skilled writers would take other people’s work and use text spinning tools so as to pass through Copyscape. Unfortunately, you end up with content that has some words that don’t make much sense. That is the easiest way to get blacklisted from potential customers. If you want to grow as a writer, you have to do your due diligence and come up with good quality content.
Swagbucks was founded in 2005 and it’s a website that pays rewards when you do common online activities like surfing, shopping, playing games, watching videos, and doing surveys.
Doing surveys is probably the most popular way to earn with Swagbucks. Major brands want to know how the market receives its products or services and so they are willing to pay money for that information.
Upon completion of any tasks, you earn reward points called SB. You also earn daily and weekly bonus points when you reach a certain goal. The rewards can be redeemed either in cash through a PayPal account or as e-gift vouchers to major stores like Amazon.
Can you make a full-time income on Swagbucks?
Probably not. This platform would be ideal for students or someone looking to make a little side cash. Still, depending on how committed you are, you can still make a substantial amount if you are willing to put in the hours.
Amazon is the world’s biggest online shopping platform. Did you know that you can make money through commissions earned from sales through Amazon?
Most people will google a product or service online before making a purchasing decision. Amazon provides a platform called the Amazon Associates program. The program allows you to earn a commission when people buy a product based on your recommendation.
To achieve that you need to review products that people are searching for. For Amazon to accept you into their Associate’s program, you will need to have an existing site.
Football Snack Helmets is a site that promotes NFL memorabilia. The owner who happens to be a good friend of mine makes a solid income through his site by directing customers from his site to Amazon.
The good news is, aside from Amazon, there are many other places that you can direct your potential clients online to purchase products that you are promoting. Most companies refer to these programs as affiliate programs. They are free to join but as I mentioned earlier, you need a website with vibrant content to qualify.
The downside to Amazon is that the commissions are pretty low, so you would have to sell tons of products to make money. It appears that they might be doing away with affiliate eventually because despite them raking in a fortune during pandemic, they have further reduced the commissions they pay.
Some people are just born with the gift of creativity. If you are one of those people who can weave magic with their hands, Etsy is the platform for you. Founded in 2005, the company is an e-commerce platform that primarily sells handmade or vintage items and craft supplies.
It’s free to join but every listing costs 020 cents. It will remain in your store for 4 months or until its sold.
What makes Etsy such a popular shopping place is a lot of items are quite unique in nature, compared to the usual mass-produced products that consumers are used to. Vintage items must be at least 20 years old.
If you are good at creating handmade items like bags, wall hangings, or jewelry, Etsy can set you up to build your side hustle.
The story of Upwork goes back to 1998 when Beerud Sheth, and Wall Street veteran, Srini Anumolu started Elance in their two-bedroom apartment in Jersey City.
They would later merge with another Greece based company called oDesk to form Elance-oDesk. In 2015 they rebranded to become Upwork.
Based out of San Francisco and Santa Clara, Upwork is the largest freelancer marketplace in the world.
The company allows you to interview, hire, and work with freelancers and freelance agencies through the company’s platform. They currently have over 12 million registered freelancers
Do you reckon you have what it takes to teach new skills? Udemy might have a place for you. Founded in 2010 in San Francisco, the platform has more than 50 million students and 57,000 instructors teaching courses in over 65 languages.
The courses are more or less tailored to improving job skills.
Like Fiverr, this is another viral platform. You don’t need to be a college professor or a real pro in your field of expertise to be allowed through the door. As a result, you get thousands of courses that offer little to no value.
Still, we do have some great courses on board. Some even offer certification, which I personally would not give to my employer. If you have a passion for teaching and have the right skill set, you can make a tidy income on Udemy. As long as you keep your courses updated and full of value, most people would be quite happy to pay for them.
To become succesful working from home requires a great deal of dedication and self-discpline. Unlike working for a your boss, nobody is keeping an eye on you to see what you are up to. It’s very easy to become compalcent. If you dont put in the work, you wont get the result you are looking
One of my favourite expressions (yes I do have a few) goes.
If you want something you have never had, you must be willing to do something you’ve never done.
You might be knowledgeable in certain areas, or you might be looking to learn new skills. Still, there is never an end to learning
