Is Optavia a Scam?

Is Optavia a Scam - featured imageHi and welcome to my Optavia review. I would imagine if you are reading this you are probably thinking of becoming a distributor. Or maybe you are already a member and just want to find out if it’s the business for you.

First I must say its good that you are doing your research. The last thing you want to do is invest your hard-earned money in a business opportunity only for you to end up high and dry.

What is the Optavia all about and can you make some good money? Well, let’s find out, shall we?

  • Company Name: Optavia
  • Website: optavia.com
  • Costs: $199 to start, $99 per year
  • Owner: Dr. Wayne S. Andersen & Bradley T. Macdonald

What is Optavia?

Millions of people around the world struggle with maintaining a healthy weight balance. That being said there is a myriad of resources and weight loss programs out there.

Equally, there is no shortage of multi-level marketing companies operating within this space.

Optavia is one such company. Founded in 2016/2017 by Dr. Wayne S. Andersen & Bradley T. Macdonald, the company sells weight loss products and programs through independent distributors.

According to their website the company offers four components to support you as you begin your journey toward Lifelong Transformation, One Healthy Habit at a Time.

Even though it’s a relatively young company it was actually rebranded from a program called “Take Shape For Life”, which was created in 2002/2003.

They have an A+ rating within the Better Business Bureau. There are also a lot of complaints filed but the company has done its best to try and resolve most of them.

Optavia is based out of Baltimore, Maryland.

How does Optavia work

Getting started with Optavia does not come cheap. You have to pay $199 to become their distributor. That gives you the basic training & marketing materials needed to help you get started.

On top of that, you will have to pay an annual fee of $99 to renew your business. That is exorbitant if you ask me.

The core essence of Optavia is to help you become a health coach. What that means is coaching new members on how to sell the products and coaching them to become coaches.

They do have a strong community of members and have different ways to keep you on track and stay connected. They do this through;

  • Meetings
  • Live events
  • Phone calls
  • Text messages
  • Skype calls

To become a coach, you will need to buy a $29.95 guide that will take you through information on Sleep, Nutrition, and Exercise.

There are 3 main ways you can make money with Optavia.

  1. Health Coach Income – Income for selling products to other people.
  2. Business Coach Income – Income for supporting coaches & building teams.
  3. Business Leader Income – Income for building & leading an organization.

As a coach and distributor, you can expect to earn anything from 18-31% of all product retail sales you make.

Can you make money with Optavia?

Absolutely.

As I mentioned earlier, there are many people out there struggling to lose those extra pounds. A lot of them are willing to try anything to achieve that goal.

I believe if you have the desire to help people and can convince them that Optavia products can help them lose weight, they would be more than willing to pay for them.

To make good money with Optavia you will need to recruit as many people as you can. Still, they will have to remain active in the business for you to make money.

That being said, the harsh reality when it comes to making money with network marketing is that it’s not as easy as a lot of people are lead to believe. People don’t like being sold stuff and most people suck at making sales.

Pros

One thing I love about Octavia is the company has a straightforward compensation plan. They use a uni-level compensation plan. Anyone who comes under you becomes part of your team. This is unlike most MLMs that use the binary system where you split your team into two and individually help them to build their own teams

Optavia also strikes me as a company that is more focussed on helping people to lose weight and less dependent on enrolling others to join in.

They also offer a refund within 30 days for anyone who might feel the products are not for them.

Are You Looking For a Way to Earn Passive Income
Without Having to Recruit?

Cons

In my opinion, I think there are many ways to lose weight. Spending hundreds of dollars each month is an expensive way to go about it. Most meal plans could cost you over $300 per month. If you have the money and Optavia is giving you the results you are looking for, then do not stop. Your health is more important than money.

But what happens when you have finally shed all that weight. It means you don’t need meal replacements and you can start eating normally again. Hopefully, you wont go back to double cheeseburgers and fries.

Most people at this stage will probably be looking at the making money side of things and that means recruiting. I am not a big fan of that.

The industry is also quite competitive with companies like Team Beachbody offering similar products.

The other thing I found rather concerning is the number of complaints on the BBB.org website (198 at the time of writing this). A lot of them have to do with orders, transactions, and refunds. Even though most complaints were resolved, that is an area the company needs to address because it doesn’t reflect well on them.

Is Optavia a Scam?

Not even close.

Optavia is a great company with great products. There are a lot of positive testimonials of people who struggled with their weight for years and experienced a dramatic change after using their products.

As long as a company has a decent product behind it, you cannot brand it a scam.

Scams, particularly pyramid schemes, tend to take money out of your pocket using deceptive means. In most cases, they sell you an endless story of investing your money in nothing to grow your money. We all know that money does not grow on trees.

Wrap up

There are many ways to lose weight and using meal replacement products is one of them. In my opinion, losing weight pretty much comes down to a change in lifestyle. There are people who lose weight and shoot right back to where they were in no time.

It takes a lot of discipline. I believe you can still lose weight by eating right and incorporating exercise in your daily routine. You don’t have to spend a fortune to lose weight and it’s easier to sustain in the long term.

Optavia Health Coaches are not real experts in health. They’re just independent distributors and so they may not know as much about weight loss as you would expect.

Most people who join Optavia will do so for the prospect of making money.

I was a former network marketer and aside from being a real pain to everyone I approached to join my business I spent a lot of money and never got to recruit even one person. I might have approached over 300 people. Some of them were clearly not impressed.

I had to face the facts. Was I really building a business or was I simply helping some top shot make their money?

All that talk about the business being easy and how anyone can do it is nothing but hot air.

The fact is, most people suck at selling.

According to this article on Wikipedia, over 99% of people who join MLM companies lose money. That is a big number.

If you are just joining Optavia or thinking of joining ask yourself whether you really stand a chance at success. I hate to burst your bubble but the odds are heavily against you.

Are there alternatives to Optavia

Absolutely yes.

There many places online like Swagbucks where you can make some side cash doing surveys. Another great place is Fiverr where you can post jobs and bid for them.

I would say one of the most effective and long term ways to make money way you can make money selling products or services is through your own website.

You don’t even need to own the products to earn commissions with a website.

Neither do you need to recruit people to your business. People need to come to you. how about you check out how I make money online without having to recruit.

Why run around chasing after people to join your opportunity and yet you can reach the billions of people who are connected on the internet today.

MLMs are a waste of time. You really need to ask yourself whether you stand a chance to make money. If you feel you have what it takes then, by all means, go for it. If you don’t, just remember to keep your options open.

Many thanks for reading my review. If you have a question or a comment on the Optavia business opportunity, please leave it below. I would love to hear from you.

Please feel free to share.
