Is Market America a Scam - Homepage snippetHi and welcome to my Market America review. Chances you are reading this because you might have been approached by a friend or relative to join the Market America business. Or maybe you just joined and just want to know what you are in for. Either way, this review is for you.

With all the business opportunities floating around these days, it’s good to do due diligence and learn what is expected of you before committing yourself to any business.

May I first start by stating that I am not a consultant with Market America and so I am not going to be asking you to whip out your credit card for your dream to success.

This review is based on my own research and the aim is to help you make an independent decision on whether to join, stay on if you are already a member or bailout. The decision is entirely up to you.

  • Company Name: Market America
  • Website:
  • Owner: James Howard Ridinger and his wife Loren

Market America opened its doors in 1992. The company has had a shaky past due to numerous lawsuits but somehow they have managed to stay afloat.

The company sells various products through an online portal where distributors earn commissions through retail sales and by referring others to join the business. Think of them as a mini Amazon store, but with a multi-level marketing angle to it.

On their website, they describe themselves as a product brokerage company

The company uses the web domain for retail e-commerce sales which it acquired from Microsoft founder Bill Gates.

James Ridinger was a one time top producer with Amway. It is not uncommon for successful network marketers to start their own gig once they learn the inner workings of the MLM they are involved in. In fact, most MLMs are founded by people who learned how to sell ‘the dream’.

The company operates in the US, Canada, Australia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Philippines, United Kingdom, Mexico, Singapore, and Malaysia.

Market America has an A rating with the Better Business Bureau but they are not accredited.

They are headquartered out of Greensboro, North Carolina.

Is Market America a Scam - productsMarket America has a massive database of products and services in different categories. They claim to have over 40 million products that one can choose from. That is impressive. Here are some of the categories the products under.

  • Health and Nutrition
  • Home and garden care
  • Weight management
  • Age management
  • Skincare
  • Pet care
  • Automotive care
  • Personal care
  • Cosmetics
  • Jewelry
  • Water filter systems

Other services also include financial management, internet marketing, entertainment and many more. Click here to check what they have in store.

The majority of products and especially services are partnerships with other companies. It’s like a one-stop-shop for all your shopping needs with the possibility of making an extra coin in the mix. Personally, I would go on Amazon or eBay if I really wanted to buy something.

How it works.

Like any multi-level marketing company, there are mainly 2 ways you can make money. You earn commissions on retail sales and from those who come under you as your downlines. You also earn cashback rewards on your own purchases. The real money lies in the team you build.

Distributors are connected to the portal where customers can buy the products through a link provided for you on the website.

Getting started with Market America is not cheap. The initial starter kit will cost you $399. All you get with this is a series of training materials, coaching, and mentoring. You will also need to spend $129 a month to stay active in the business. There are also paid seminars and training events that will cost you anywhere from $20 to $200, depending on how extravagant the event is.

Like every MLM out there, there is a compensation plan that shows you how you make money. I am not a fan of explaining them because its like algebra. It is complicated so I will leave it to the experts to break it down for you.

Pros and Cons.

Every business has the good and bad side to it that one has to come to terms with. Let’s check out how both sides of the coin play out with the Market America business opportunity.

The good.

With the right skill set and mindset, one can make money with this business. Indeed with any business. There are very many success stories within the business. Success in the network marketing game is all about getting as many people through the door as possible. Build a huge downline and you will reap the fruits of your labor.

They do also have a great range of products which is great because you can choose the product that you feel would be great to promote. Some of the products can be found in the mainstream market like Gillette, Vicks and Estee Lauder.

I also like the fact that they have embraced the online shopping model. Most MLMs still hawk their products with distributors. We live at a time where the world is going down the online route especially in the retail industry.

The hard part is reselling the products.

How many people do you know that will readily jump in to join your business. Let’s check out the cons.

The bad.

This is the recruiting business. In all likelihood, you will be approaching friends and family to join your opportunity. The trouble with MLMs is that not much has changed in terms of the business model. You will not make money if you dont build a team and that simply approaching your brother, sister, cousin, your doctor or random people on the streets with the opportunity. If you are not comfortable doing that, then this will not work for you.

I have never personally bought or used any of the products but many people seem to agree that the prices of some of the products are higher than you would find elsewhere. Which is expected because there is the little matter of compensating distributors. Obviously, if they sold at normal prices, no one would make a dime.

Cashback is what you get when you buy a product. The majority of the products only pay a measly $2 as cashback. In other words, its like buying a $100 item and getting a $2 discount. Wouldnt call that life-changing.

The other thing I find confusing is that anyone can jump on the online portal and buy the products without having to go through a distributor. That makes it incredibly difficult to convince someone to buy through your link.

Is Market America scam?

A lot of people term MLM companies as scams and this is largely due to the salsey, pushy tactics that people are subjected to. In my opinion, as long as there is a product behind the business then you can’t brand it a scam.

The FTC has very strict rules and regulations when it comes to MLMs. In fact, many companies like Herbalife have found themselves in hot soup for using deceptive tactics in the business. It all comes down to willing buyer willing seller. That’s just business and there is nothing wrong with that.

Market America is not a scam.

Wrap up.

Market America distributors are fiercely defensive of the business. Many will tell you that this is not an MLM, simply because they use a binary compensation system as opposed to the uni-level which many MLMs use.

Here is the deal. As long as you are being paid on different levels depending on who goes under your team, it’s as multi-level as it gets.

All those supercharged high energy meetings where you are told that it’s your fault if you fail in the business for not believing enough is BS. Most people fail in business not by not believing in it, but having little or no passion in the business.

I was a former distributor with Amway. Team 1 Global, the training support team I was attached to became a cult-like movement for me. I loved the products and the prospect of making money, but not the business. I was bored to hell.

There was all this chanting and excitement that felt really awkward in meetings. If you don’t enjoy what you do, all the money in the world won’t fix that. There are those who have what it takes. If you are an introvert like me, this isn’t for you.

The fact of the matter is, it doesn’t work for the majority. And by the majority, I mean almost 99% of consultants, Unfranchise distributors or agents or whatever fancy name they call themselves make little to no income. Check out this article on Wikipedia, and you will understand what I am saying.

Most people just look up to the person on the podium who shares their journey to success. The prospect of living a life of endless luxury, traveling to exotic destinations is what draws people to the business. Living the dream.

It works for some. You just need to ask yourself whether you have the same energy as the top dogs.

During my days in MLM, I think must have approached over 200 people with the business opportunity. Some of my friends did not take that very well. Good friends are hard to come by. Why turn them into business transactions?

Needless to say, I never got a single downline or sale. Can you imagine 200 people coming to your store and not buying a single item? That just sucks. The numbers didn’t add up and that is why I left.

Multi-level marketing is as dodgy as hell.

Truth be told you are not really running a business. The people running the business are the people whose products you are selling. They dictate what you sell, price and what you make for it. If you owned the business, you would have a say in that.

If Market America decided to call it a day, there goes your business.

At the very end of it, you are just an overrated salesperson.

Can you build a business without recruiting

That is a resounding YES!

There many places online like Swagbucks where you can make some side cash doing surveys. Another great place is Fiverr where you can post jobs and bid for them.

I would say one of the most effective and long term ways to make money selling products or services is through your own website.

You don’t even need to own the products to earn commissions with a website. A website is your connection between you and the billions of people connected on the internet. If you are looking for a true and tested way on how about you check out how I make money online without having to recruit.

Why run around chasing after people to join your opportunity and yet you can reach the billions of people who are connected on the internet today.

4.48 billion people to be precise at the time of writing this article and growing by the day.

MLMs are a waste of time. You really need to ask yourself whether you stand a chance to make money. If you feel you have what it takes then, by all means, go for it. If you don’t, just remember there are many other alternatives.
