is-fiverr-worth-it-homepageIs Fiverr worth it? A lot of people are taking online jobs and Fiverr is one of those online web platforms offering online digital services. Services start from $5 dollars onwards, hence its name. Each job is referred to as a gig and gigs will cost more depending on customer’s specifications and needs.

Additional services to a gig are called Gig extras. The way it works is say if you wanted a background removal from an image, it will cost you $ 5. It would cost you another $ 5 dollars if you want the source file. Another $5 for say having it in different formats.

It would cost you more say if you wanted it urgently.  And so on. A gig can go from $5 to a few hundreds. It would cost more say if you wanted it urgently.

The company was launched in 2010 in Tel Aviv, Israel and provides a 2-way forum where buyers can order a service directly from a contractor already registered with Fiverr. There are over three million contractors making it the largest online freelance web platform.

Popular gigs offered include graphic design, content writing. Resume writing and SEO web traffic.

The fact that anyone with a certain kind of skill can put up their profile, has attracted some bizarre gigs like ‘I say your message in my unicorn head’ to ‘I will paint your message on my body with dance in the jungle’. There is even a guy called Jesus who does some weird gigs in there.

Fiverr is an exciting place to be. For $5, You can literally get any digital service done for you. There are new categories being uploaded every day.

The pros

is-fiverr-worth-it-qouteThe Fiver website is easy to navigate. Ordering a gig is easy and takes just a few clicks.

  • Quick turnaround. Usually within 48 hours
  • Huge database of sellers to choose from.
  • It gives people an opportunity to engage in something they love doing.
  • The low cost of gigs gives small businesses an opportunity to outsource services that would normally cost hundreds of dollars to do.
  • $5 may not be much to some people, but for skilled and semi-skilled people especially in low-income parts of the world, $5 can go a long way. Fiverr has therefore opened up opportunities to people who would never have a chance to exploit their skills.

The cons.

The marketplace is basically a viral platform and it opens the door for illegal digital service. A good example is you can pay an actor on Fiverr to promote a dubious product.

Selling can be very time-consuming.

Highly competitive and not easy to break even especially if you are selling a popular product.

Finding a good seller is a hit and miss affair. You might have to go through a few sellers before finding one that is reliable and you can work with.

Quality is sometimes compromised and so it might not be the ideal platform to outsource for highly professional jobs.

Most of the system is automated and so anyone can upload their profile with very limited control.

Fiverr retain
is-fiverr-worth-it-commentss a dollar for every gig. That translates to 20% which I think it’s pretty high compared to other freelance platforms.

There is no rating system to know who delivers or doesn’t. All sellers seem to have positive comments. I am not sure whether it’s deliberate but I have never seen negative comments on sellers at Fiverr. Maybe they buy comments from Fiverr too!

Who is Fiverr for?

Fiverr is an ideal place for solo operators to small business start-ups. You can build a brand around the services offered at Fiverr. The low cost of gigs makes it easy for someone with a limited budget to start.

It’s also ideal for people who would like to supplement their income. Freelance jobs if done well can even lead to a full-time income.

As I mentioned earlier $5 may not appear like much but goes a long way for some people. I had a friend who once told me that he has managed to create a full-time income on Fiverr.

Students and people getting into the job market can greatly benefit from Fiverr. The biggest hurdle for someone entering the job market is the experience. Fiverr provides a platform where job seekers can have an online portfolio that they are already earning from, to show to potential employers thereby increasing their chances of finding employment.
Fiverr Tools & Training

The application process on Fiverr is pretty straight forward. You simply upload 3 of your favorite images of whatever product you are promoting. Images must be of the specified dimensions. If they are any smaller or bigger, they will not be uploaded.

You also upload details of your educational background and give a bit of an insight about yourself.

Once the application process is complete; you may request for your first gig. To increase your chances of getting buyers, you are encouraged to share your profile on social media channels.

The Fiverr customer support panel is highly automated and will take you to the FAQs section for most of your queries. If you can’t find an answer, then you submit your question via email. A reply will normally be sent to you in 1 to 2 days.

My overall take…

Fiverr is a great platform to work with for both buyers and sellers. It has provided opportunities to many who would not have had the chance. It’s also made it easy for small business to outsource services that would have cost 000’s of dollars.

If you are looking to scale up your work, I would highly recommend building a website. Having a strong web presence is always the starting point of all online businesses.  It gives your business that professional touch and more exposure.

The beauty of it is you don’t have to pay anything to have a website
