It can be very intimidating when you are trying to figure out how to reach your goals in life.
Do you remember as a child how you thought about the kind of future you envisioned?
I always thought how one day I will have a big office, drive a big luxury car and live in a big palatial home.
The thought of even having a family of my own never occurred to me. I only thought of me and the great life that lay ahead.
Fast forward a few decades later and I can’t help wondering just how naïve I was. While some of my childhood dreams were valid, most were based on my understanding at that age.
I look at my 8-year-old son and I realize just how much he thinks like I used to. Big ambitions for things that he will either lose interest in as he grows older or things he will never achieve.
Like watching all the cartoons that you can for instance. We all outgrow them but it’s hard for kids to see it that way.
People sometimes approach goal-setting like running the marathon. In a marathon, once you cross the finish line, you only achieve what you have been training for in as far as race is concerned.
A good marathon runner will wake up the following day to train for the next race.
The reality of life is that once you attain your goal, you had better keep going or else you will reverse on your gain. Life’s goals tend to be shifty and sometimes lose relevance over time.
Having said that, it’s important to set goals so as to give ourselves a clear path on where to channel our efforts.
1. A journey of a thousand miles.
Change is the only thing in life that is constant. Progress is not. As you work towards achieving your goals understand that there are days you will make much progress and there are days you will not.
One thing that is guaranteed is that as long as you are making progress, no matter how little, change will happen. The secret to failing, on the other hand, is in not taking action.
2. Enjoy the process.
Have fun in your journey. Don’t over obsess yourself with attaining your goals forgetting that other things around you matter as well. Enjoy the rain and the sunshine as well.
Take time to relax and recharge your batteries. Any good trainer will tell you that. Life is not a race and it’s not about who gets where before the other. Breathe
3. Be flexible in your goals
Don’t spend too much time working on shaky goals. Sit back, review your efforts and if whatever you are doing is not working, find an alternative route. After all, chasing your goals is about changing your life.
4. Walk where others have been.
Find a mentor who will inspire you. Somebody who has traveled down the same path that you are embarking on. Anyone who has ever found success had a mentor to guide them. A mentor is real reminder that it is possible to achieve your goals.
5. Fall in love with your dreams.
The desire to succeed is what wakes you up every morning. It’s frustrating to wake up to a job that you hate. On the other hand, there is a lot of gratification when you wake up to doing what you love. Dont let your passion burn out.
Cultivate the desire to succeed and you will eventually get there.
Passion is the fuel that keeps you going from day to day.
6. Be grateful.
Always look back and take the time to appreciate how far you have come. Be grateful to those around you, because you couldn’t have done it without them.
Be grateful for good health and the opportunities that you have. Life can be unpredictable and sometimes it doesn’t always work out to our expectations. Count your blessings and be happy.
7. Put family first.
When you go home every night to your loving spouse or children, it makes everything you do towards achieving your goals worthwhile. Your family will remain your ultimate measure of success.
Cherish every moment you spend with them because as they say, the most important things in life are not always things.
