Are You Looking For a Way to Earn Passive Income Online?
It seems as long as there exists a problem, there is an MLM solution to it. I have done many reviews, but it never occurred to me that there is actually one that is based on selling self Defence products for women.
And why not? That is a perfectly good niche to go into. A lot of women do experience violence meted on them from time to time. The intro video says that 1 in every 5 women will experience the horror of rape in their lifetime. Do we really have that many sick men in society?
If that is a fact to go by, then I must agree, women have to find a way to protect themselves and if they can make some money on the side, even better.
Damsel in Defense, (which I believe is the opposite of damsel in distress…clever) is a multi-level marketing company that was established in 2011 by Mindy Lin and Bethany Hughes. Mindy was a one time sales rep with Mary Kay. She injected a lot of her expertise in the business.
In 2014, the recruited Bob Hipple who helped come up with the company’s compensation plan. They run the business with their spouses’ jimmy Lin and Chris Hughes.
The company has had a good run since its inception with 10000 distributors in all 50 states and over 21 million in sales at the time of writing this.
They do enjoy an A+ rating with the better business bureau.
Damsel in Defense has a range of some very fascinating weapons if you can call them so. Like a stun gun called gotcha disguised as camera. Wow, so there is some real James Bond gadgets in this world.
The thing about these weapons is they are not meant to kill or maim. They are just mean to inflict enough paint to deter your attacker.
They have some rather interesting names for their products. Let’s take a look at some of them.
- To Whom It May Concern Tactical Pen – This is a real pen that comes with a flashlight and a jagged edge that can obtain DNA from an attacker
- Sock It To Me Platinum – A striking tool that comes with a platinum finish.
- Leaf Me Alone Necklace – A beautiful necklace that comes with a whistle that you can blow to scare away your attacker.
- Multi-Shay Backpack- This backpack comes with a bulletproof insert. Pretty handy should you find yourself in a mass shooting scenario.
- Protected Pepper – This a pepper spray that comes with a disable pin that prevents it from being used against you.
- Rechargeable Road Trip – This one is pretty cool. Emergency auto tool that comes with strobe and LED flashlight for roadside assist, sharp blade to cut seat belts and a punch free glass breaker. Includes USB wall and car charger and a power bank to charge other electronics and a high pitched alarm.
- Coffee, Jesus & Pepper Spray T-shirt – You read that right. Wear this T-shirt and let everyone know that they need not mess with you. The last thing you want is to go near a damsel loaded with caffeine, Jesus and pepper spray.
They do have a range of great products. I would happily buy some of them. Like the Rechargeable Road Trip. The only problem is that some of their products like the stun gun and pepper sprays are outlawed in some states. So that automatically reduces your target audience.
How it works.
To become a distributor with Damsel in Defense will cost $99. That will get you a starter kit. You can also opt to buy a bonus pack for $65.
Here is the kicker. To stay active and thus qualify for all commissions, you need to attain $150 PV over a rolling 3-month period. No wonder most distributors end up becoming their own best customers. Everyone wants everyone to join so its cutthroat competition.
You can only have to many soft weapons and gadgets.
I am not a fan of explaining compensation plans but I can tell they do offer some good commissions on sales and recruits. Starting at 25 to 30%. That is a lot more than what many other MLM companies pay.

Pros and cons
As far as MLMs go, Damsel in Defense is certainly a cut above the rest. The products are great and I can see why people would want to join and become distributors. Personal safety is something that everyone wants. Plus, I love the fancy names of some of the products.
Can you succeed in the business?
The question is, do you have what it takes?
If you possess the gift of the gab and know how to close a sale with ease, then this could work out well for you. The company is still young and there is massive potential for growth. Their products are also not pricey, compared to what you get in the market. Most MLMs tend to double or even triple their prices.
Damsel in Defense is also actively involved in charity, which is something many MLM companies do.
I think the biggest downside to becoming a Damsel in Defense or any other MLM distributor is that to a large extent friends and family become business transactions. It always starts with someone, a friend or a relative in most cases introducing you to the opportunity.
In most cases you will find yourself being invited to a party or a meeting. You get caught in the euphoria and before you know it, you are in the band wagon.
This is the recruiting business. The more people you can get through the door, the better your chances. I have been there, and I can tell you that it doesn’t work for the most.
The other problem I see with this opportunity is that it is mainly aimed at targeting the female audience. That drastically reduces the demographics of the people you can sell to.
The lie of network marketing
I was involved in network marketing for some time and I can tell you it doesn’t work for the majority of the people. If you have to drive to parties, attend meetings buy the products not to mention the extra hours you have to put in everyday just to grow your business, you will agree with me you are probably losing money.
People fail in this form of business because it is by no means easy as they are led to believe. According to The Balance Small Business, less than 1% of all people who join multi-level marketing businesses succeed.
Mary Kay once described the business as filling your bathtub with the sinkhole open. Most people will be gone once they realize just how difficult the business is. The fall out rate is massive.
You may be asking, so how come Damsel in Defense has turned out such huge profits in such a short period of time? Good question.
Low overheads. The products move. Maintaining your quota to be eligible for commissions is what you want. It’s a psychology thing. Again, everyone is doing that in the hope they will make a sale.
Secondly, they don’t need to advertise. That is why they give you a cut from sales and recruiting. At the very bottom of it, you will be doing all the donkey work for them.
You are not really running a business. The owners of the company whose products you are distributing are the ones running a business. You are just a salesperson.
The whole model of the multi-level marketing business is also shrouded in a lot of controversy. It’s not not really about giving people an opportunity to make money. More like reaping the benefits out of their hard work.
I would say Damsel in Defence is an okay company. In fact I would recommend them to an experienced marketer.
They are however no different from other MLM companies. MLMs sell all sort of products. They also sell false hope.
As I mentioned earlier, you are more likely to lose money than make it.
That being said, Damsel in Defence is not a pyramid scheme like some people would claim. With pyramid schemes, the last person always emerges on the other end with nothing. At least with this opportunity you end up with some great products that could ward of some creepy people.
Opinion is always divided as to whether multi level marketing is a scam or not. It all comes down to who is making money and who is not. Most people who don’t make it will be crying foul while those who succeed will be accusing the losers of lacking the patience to grow the business.
I have been involved in network marketing before and I know how the game plays out. Network marketing by its very nature is a legit way of doing business and people succeed big time in it. In fact, there are millionaires in the industry.
I left the business because it was all about recruiting. There are also some very deceptive tactics like inviting people for a meeting, party or dinner without telling them what it’s all about, and then springing the opportunity on them. That is the easiest way to lose friends.
Seldom do people even talk about the products. That’s because no one makes money just by selling products. Are you ready to start dragging your friends, colleagues and relatives to those hyped up meetings.
Can you build a business without recruiting
In the years I have been in the marketing industry I have come to appreciate the fact that the only way you can make money selling products is by having your own website.
Even with network marketing, it’s easier to find real leads to your opportunity with a website. It beats hitting on strangers. This is because when people do a Google search they already know what they are looking for. That is what we call a targeted audience. It’s probably how you ended up here.
You don’t even need to own the products to earn commissions with a website. And neither do you need to spend money to own one. This website generates me a consistent income without having to chase after people. People come to me.
Why hang around shopping malls pouncing on people trying to get them to join your opportunity and yet you can reach the billions of people who are connected on the internet today.
If you belong to the 99% plus number of the people trying desperately to make money recruiting people to their business, how about you check out how I make money online without having to recruit.
MLMs are a waste of time. Some people will tell you not to listen to naysayers like me, but you really need to ask yourself whether you stand a chance.
