A good rule of thumb is to go with what I call the +100/-100 rule.
+100 means there are at least over a hundred monthly searches on that keyword. -100 means that there are less than 100 competing pages on that keyword. The closer to zero the better. Using this post as an example, the keyword I chose was SEO packages for a small business

Titles and meta title
Many SEO companies consider the title is to be more important than keywords when it comes to search optimization. I have to agree with them. The title tells the reader what you’re about, and its what convinces them to enter your page.
Your business might meet all the proper SEO criteria and is visible in search engines, but if you don’t entice your clients with a captivating title they will move to the next result.
That’s why, your title needs to be descriptive, clear, engaging and of course, unique. The title will also help your search results displaying and boost you up to the top.
When choosing a title do a search of your product or service on Google. Observe the competition and see how many companies are already using it. Don’t use the same title everyone else using but instead come up with something original.
Meta titles are the little snippet info that is displayed at the bottom of the title. It gives the customer a glimpse of what to expect if they decide to click on the page. It’s almost like a movie trailer. Am sure you may have a watched a movie because the trailer looked pretty good.
The first 140 at the beginning of your post or page will be used as your meta title by default if left out.
I thought it might be a good idea to mention this because there is a lot of misinformation on meta tags. The fact is they are completely useless. Years ago they had some SEO value but not anymore. Just don’t bother with them.
