Why Online Shopping is So Popular – 7 Awesome Reasons

why online shopping is so popular - shop

There is no doubt that online shopping is taking over the world. We live at a time when most people just wouldn’t be bothered to drive to the store to buy the product they looking for.

But why online shopping is so popular?

Retail stores are closing sho or opting to go fully online because that is where consumers are heading to. Some stores like Toys r Us have had to bear the brunt of online shopping and were recently forced to close their doors. Kmart is another retail chain that is struggling to stay afloat.

With the rapid growth and access of the internet and easy and secure transactions over the net, there is simply no stopping the trend.

The first thing I ever bought online was a phone on eBay about 10 years ago.

My beautiful Nokia cost me just around $300. It was going for around $450 in most stores. When the dainty piece of equipment was delivered at my doorstep about 2 weeks later, I was elated.

From that day on I became a fan of online shopping. These days, unless it’s really important that I have to buy something here and now, I always go online. The advantages are numerous

It is estimated that 27% of people worldwide shop online, with the bulk of that number (35%) coming from China and South Korea. This is due to the huge population in that region.

Online shopping, which sometimes is referred to as e-shopping or internet shopping is a process where consumers are able to purchase goods or services from the seller via the internet.

There are 2 types of products you can buy online. Digital products e.g. games, books, music or software excreta which once you complete your payment you can begin to use immediately.

Physical products- Clothes, Groceries, electronics- This are ordered from a virtual store and the process of delivering it to the consumer begins once payment is finalized. Deliveries can be done within a few hours to a couple of weeks depending on the distance from the consumer.

Online shopping became a reality for most people with the explosive growth of the internet in the mid-90s. The mobile phone has also impacted heavily on online shopping.

Advantages of online shopping

  1. Price

The biggest advantage of online shopping comes down to price. The reason why products cost less than buying in-store is that online stores have little to no overheads. A physical store must meet its recurring expenditure like rent, sales people, advertising etcetera.

All these costs are heaped on to the consumer at the end of it for the business to be profitable. Price comparison also gives the consumer a wide range of vendors to choose from, unlike a physical store where in most cases you have to settle for whatever price you are charged.

  2. Convenience

Online stores have no closing times, unlike most physical businesses. This is especially useful for people with physical disability or moms with small children.

  3. No annoying Sales People

I don’t know about you but I dread seeing those ever-smiling smartly dressed sales people approach you when you enter a store to buy something.

These guys never seem to have a bad day.I look at some of the things I have bought and I can tell you, I was arm-twisted by the sales guy to buy it. Anyway, it’s tiny inconveniences like those that make online shopping a blast.

  4. Wide range to choose from

We all love having variety in our lives. When you walk into a physical store there is only so much you can choose from. Items also run out of stock from time to time and that can be annoying.

With online shopping, you have access to an incredible amount of items to choose from. A good example is Amazon where you have roughly 480 million products. There is not a physical store that can beat that.

  5. Crowds

Have you ever been to the local mall around Christmas or when there is a major sale going on? It’s an unbelievable the number of people who go shopping during those times.

It must be a nightmare for an introvert. Online shopping allows you to shop in the quiet of your home away for the noise of crowds and endless traffic jams.

  6. Consumer Reviews

Sometimes you really want to know everything there is to know about what you are about to buy before using your credit card. Most products online have consumer reviews that explain the nitty-gritty of a particular product.

This enables you to make an informed choice on what you are about to buy before paying for it. In a physical store, if the sales guy tells you product A is better than product B, he is probably getting a good commission from it.

  7. Discreet Shopping

Let’s face it. Many of us cannot just walk into a shop and buy certain things. You probably have to sneak in as the last customer of the day and whisper to the shop attendant to pass it to you.

Online shopping allows us to buy our most secret products (I won’t mention them here because they are discreet) without letting the world know what you are buying.

In conclusion

As you can see, there are very good reasons why online shopping is so popular. The internet is growing by the day and so online shopping is only going to get bigger and better.

In fact, I foresee a future where online shopping will be the only form of shopping. Many physical stores are closing shop literally to go fully online. The competition is stiff and so it only makes sense to do what your competitors are doing.

With the massive growth of online shopping comes massive opportunities. Product reviews are done by ordinary people on their websites.

Have you ever gone on a website where they have reviewed a product and left a link at the end leading you to where you can buy the product? What normally happens is should you decide to buy the product through that link, the website owner earns a commission from the purchase.

That’s called affiliate marketing and it another multi- billion industry. You too can become an affiliate marketer. It takes some training to learn how to do it, but once you get the hang of it can lead to a pretty good steady income for you. Click here to learn how to do affiliate marketing.
